Unionville, Ontario - Eight-year-old karting phenom Antonio Serravalle has added another elusive title to his racing resume as the Pserra Racing pilot took home the ASN Canada FIA Canadian National Championships Micro Max title last weekend in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. Working with tuner and 2005 SKUSA SuperNationals SuperPro Champion Lorenzo Mandarino, the young karter scored the pole position, two heat race wins and the prefinal victory on his way to reaching the checkered flag first in the 14-lap finale. Held at the scenic Jim Russell Karting Academy, the same track where Serravalle was proclaimed the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship Micro Max Champion a few weeks prior, the rising star was the driver to beat all week long.
Getting off on the right foot from the first time out on track, the Pserra Racing pilot placed his Tecno chassis on top of the time sheets during both official practice sessions. Back on the fast and twisty 16 turn, 1.4 kilometer track the next day, Serravalle claimed the pole position in qualifying with a time of 1:02.263, over half a second clear of his nearest competitor. With the prime position in place for the start of all three heat races, the young gun was well on his way to earning his first national title.
After the start, bumping and rubbing got him off track at the start of the first heat race and finding himself down the running order, Serravalle persevered to cross the stripe in second while posting the fastest lap of the race - six tenths clear of the field. A post-race penalty moved him one position back, and from there on Serravalle was on a tear the rest of the weekend. Edging out his nearest competitor in the second heat by a mere 0.096 at the line, the up-and-coming driver then lead every lap and posted another fast lap in the third heat on his way to a two second victory.
Back at the Mont-Tremblant circuit for Championship Sunday, Serravalle posted the quickest time in the morning warm-up session before karts would take to the track for the all-important prefinals. After leading every lap of the ten-lap prefinal through a reserve finish saving tires and equipment for the final, Serravalle crossed just five one-hundredths ahead to secure the pole for the final event. With everything on the line during the day's main event, Serravalle was flawless, again leading every lap and posting the fastest lap of the race on his way to a dominating 11.119-second victory to earn the title of Canadian National Champion. With his victory, Mandarino also received the 2011 Canadian Champion Tuner Award for the Micro Max class.
Antonio would like to thank his dad, Peter Serravalle, and Wrex Roth for the engine power as well as Lorenzo Mandarino for tuning and driver coaching. In turn, Lorenzo Mandarino would like to congratulate Antonio for a well-earned championship.
